Friendly Fraud: Honest Mistake or Malicious Chargeback?

Friendly Fraud: Honest Mistake or Malicious Chargeback?

There's a critical distinction that every ecommerce merchant needs to understand: the difference between friendly fraud and chargeback fraud. While both result in chargebacks, their motivations are completely different.

Friendly Fraud vs. Chargeback Fraud

Friendly fraud occurs when a legitimate cardholder disputes a charge by mistake. Perhaps they forgot about a subscription, didn't recognize the merchant name on their statement, or a family member made a purchase without their knowledge.

Chargeback fraud is intentional. The cardholder makes a legitimate purchase and then deliberately disputes the charge to get their money back while keeping the product or service.

The Challenge

It is virtually impossible to differentiate between the two since in both cases it's a legitimate cardholder making a legitimate purchase. This makes it extremely difficult for merchants to dispute these chargebacks, and friendly fraud rates now account for up to 90% of all fraud in industries like digital goods.

EMV 3-D Secure as the Solution

EMV 3-D Secure addresses both types of fraud by authenticating the cardholder in real-time:

  • Real-time authentication: Verifies the cardholder using metadata and risk-based analysis during checkout
  • Liability shift: Moves fraud liability from the merchant to the card-issuing bank
  • Eliminates chargeback costs: Authenticated transactions are protected from fraud-related chargeback reason codes

Whether the chargeback is an honest mistake or a malicious attempt, 3DS authentication protects merchants by proving the cardholder was verified at the time of purchase.
